Emily Giffard-Taylor, founder of Bees & Taylor, grew up in a family of crafters. Whilst her mother was a dressmaker producing clothes from a shop on the Kings Road, fashion was in the blood for many generations before that. Here followed an appreciation for the importance of a quality fabric and an eye for a well cut garment. Still now this is at the heart of her wardrobe choices – buy less, buy well.
Beginning work in the world of fashion journalism and learning her way from Conde Nast to ELLE, Emily developed a broad understanding and background in all things fashion. She has experienced all sides of the industry including retail, e-tail and PR but it was fashion styling where she found her niche, setting up her own business in 2013.
With an established portfolio across celebrity, editorial and commercial Emily began offering her styling services to private individuals; currently she travels to all corners of the globe to meet with clients, allowing everyone the opportunity to tap into her styling experience.
Expanding her skill set to incorporate pattern cutting as well as garment making and basic alterations and customisation, Emily has been able to broaden her talents, working across costume and wardrobe styling also.
Q&A with Emily
What is your never regret buy?
My Gucci silver glitter mules. At one time shiny and new, now battered and worn, but no less loved. It was I-need-it-in-my-life at first sight and I've got my pounds per wear, and more. I'm a believer in blending high street with luxury, old with the new - don't be scared to mix it up.
What is your most important style rule?
My advice, wear what suits YOU. A capsule wardrobe made up of classic styles, transitional pieces and vintage originals helps me to create a look for any occasion; whilst that offbeat gem adds a little bit of ‘me’ to any outfit. Buy what you like, what suits and what makes you feel good, and indulge in trends second.
What is your failsafe London look?
Monochrome is the simple way to do catwalk fashion on a high street budget. Modern, streamlined and dramatic, life in black and white will never go out of fashion.
What do you not leave the house without?
Whilst I am usually found barefaced and on-the-go, I never leave home without my trusty lippy. Bright, sexy and bold it has me ready to face the day. My favourite statement lip is Burberry in Military Red, for its glossy texture and long-lasting colour.
What is your top fashion tip?
Find a local seamstress you trust – nowadays one size does not fit all and a few tweaks make sure my clothes fit like a glove. Whether it's taking in on the waist, letting down a hem or getting creative, my wardrobe is that much better for their attention!
Your favourite London hang-out?
The V&A. I love a weekday fly-by to peruse my favourite exhibitions. From McQueen to Dior, Tim Walker and Mary Quant there is always something to learn, entertain and inspire.
Life is better when...
... the sun is shining. Nothing beats an early morning rooftop swim at White City House and a coffee in the sunshine.
